Caffeine is one of the most widely-used psychoactive drugs in the world. It is the main active ingredient in tea and coffee and is found in over 100 different plant species. The related stimulants theophylline and theobromine occur in the cocoa plant from which chocolate is made. Coffee contains 100 milligrams of
caffeine per average cup; tea maybe half as much. And a square of chocolate contains as much stimulant in the form of caffeine, theophylline and theobromine as a cup of tea. Caffeine is added to various soft drinks, as well as being a component of some pain medications. Caffeine pills are also available without prescription.
